OUR STORY
A New Beginning
The roots of the Giannò family are in Sicily, but my great grandparents moved to Libya in 1911, pursuing their dream of a new land.
After King Idris' government in Libya was overthrown in a coup d'état in 1969, all Italian properties were confiscated, among them my family's farmlands in Tajoura, on the outskirts of Tripoli.
In order to establish a new and lasting home that would hold our family together following years of hardship, my grandparents bought an Azienda Agricola in Umbria in 1972. My 11 cousins, my sister and I spent most of our summers there, and grew deeply attached to the grounds.
We founded Azienda Agricola Poggio Petroso on this land and on my grandparents' values: family, tradition, and our love for the home that unites us.
ABOUT AZIENDA AGRICOLA POGGIO PETROSO
The Azienda Agricola Poggio Petroso is a winery that was founded in 2013. Our goal was to create excellent wines reflective of the extraordinary potential of the Umbria region, without compromising in viticulture or vinification.
In the winter 2014/2015, we planted Sangiovese (Brunello Grosso and Prugnolo Gentile), Syrah, and Petit Verdot varieties on rootstocks that are tolerant to drought. We do not irrigate, as we believe that our wines should be an unaltered reflection of our territory and our climate.
The weeds are manually removed without the use of herbicides, the grapes are picked by hand and selected one-by-one, and the absolute minimum is done during the winemaking process to create a genuine product that reflects the strength and character of Umbria.
100% ORGANIC
We are committed to organic farming and organic wine-making. All our wines from 2019 onwards are organic certified.
Certification
IT BIO 006 / LN 79 / LT 17.

KONRAD GIANNÒ
Konrad Giannò was born in Rome in 1971. He has a PhD in Physics from the Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich and works for Google since 2008.
After founding the Azienda Agricola Poggio Petroso in 2013, he passed with distinction the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines and Spirits, and attended the Level 4 courses without yet finding the time to complete examinations.
Konrad has always been passionate about wine and food, and he grew attached to the territory of Montegabbione from his early childhood. Poggio Petroso was born out of his desire to create wines that would be a delicious expression of the terroir of this wondeful region.
